How the UK theory test works

The car theory test is taken at a theory test centre and has two parts, taken on the same day. First, you answer 50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes. Three of these questions are about a short video clip. You need 43 correct answers to pass this part.

Then comes the hazard perception test. You must pass both parts to pass the theory test: if you fail one, you have to book and take the whole test again.

The hazard perception test

You watch 14 video clips. Each one shows at least one developing hazard, and one clip contains two, so there are 15 hazards to spot. You score up to 5 points per hazard: the earlier you respond once it starts to develop, the higher your score. The maximum is 75 and the pass mark is 44.

Click when you see a hazard starting to develop. Clicking continuously or in a pattern scores zero for that clip. Practise with official DVSA hazard perception clips as well as with question banks.

Booking: cost, age and what to bring

  • Cost: the car theory test costs £23 when booked on GOV.UK.
  • Provisional licence: you need one to book your theory test.
  • Age: from 17, or from 16 if you get or have applied for the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP.
  • Residency: you must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the 12 months before your test.
  • On the day: bring your UK photocard driving licence.

  7. Other types of vehicle
  8. Vehicle handling

  10. Rules of the road
  11. Road and traffic signs
  12. Documents

Questions people often get wrong

Stopping distances

On a dry road, the typical stopping distance is 23 metres at 30 mph and 96 metres at 70 mph (Highway Code).

The two-second rule

Leave at least a two-second gap behind the vehicle in front, at least double that on wet roads and up to ten times on icy roads.

Drink-drive limit

80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; 50 mg in Scotland.

Mobile phones

Using a hand-held phone while driving: £200 fine and 6 penalty points. New drivers lose their licence with 6 points within 2 years of passing.

National speed limits (cars)

60 mph on single carriageways, 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Built-up areas are usually 30 mph, and 20 mph on many roads (the default in Wales).

Motorway lanes

Keep in the left lane unless overtaking, and never overtake on the left except in slow-moving queues.

How to revise and pass first time

  1. Practise every day. 20 to 30 minutes a day beats long weekend sessions.
  2. Learn from every mistake. Read the explanation for each question you get wrong.
  3. Target your weak topics. Use your topic scores to revise where you lose the most marks.
  4. Take full mock tests. 50 questions in 57 minutes, with no help, just like the real test.
  5. Book when you are consistent. Aim for 47+ out of 50 on several mock tests in a row, and practise hazard perception clips too.
